Short Biography (D. Cohen)
Professor Daniel (Dani) Cohen was appointed Head of Tel Aviv University (TAU) School of Public Health in 2011.
Professor Cohen served in the Israel Defense Forces for many years and was the Director of the Infectious Diseases Research Institute in the Medical Corps. He joined Tel Aviv University for a full-time academic position in 2002 and has been a full Professor since 2007. Prof. Cohen was the Head of the Department of Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine from 2007 to 2011.
Prof. Cohen founded the Tiberio Swartz Forum on Epidemiology of Infectious Diseases and Biosecurity, a very active national stage for scientific communications and discussions in the field of infectious diseases and vaccines. Prof. Cohen is also the Director of the Stanley Steyer Institute for Cancer Epidemiology and Research and Diana & Stanley Steyer Chair of Cancer Prevention and Control. Additionally, he is the co-founder and co-director of the Summer Institute of Advanced Epidemiology and Preventitive Medicine at TAU School of Public Health conducted in collaboration with the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.
Prof. Cohen serves as an executive board member of the Middle East Consortium for Infectious Diseases Surveillance (MECIDS) and also acts on various national and international advisory boards in the field of infectious diseases and vaccines.
Prof. Cohen has also been a consultant for the World Health Organization on several
occasions.
Prof. Cohen has supervised many graduate and post-graduate students. He has received numerous competitive research grants from US National Institutes of Health, US Army Medical Research and Development Command, European Comission, Nuclear Threat Initiative, Israel Chief Scientist of Ministry of Health, Israel Institute for Health Policy Research etc. and several awards for outstanding contribution to research. He is the author of more than 190 peer-reviewed articles.
Prof. Cohen holds a PhD degree from Tel Aviv University, Sackler Faculty of Medicine, as well as a Masters of Public Health from the School of Public Health at Hebrew University.
Research Interests:
• Epidemiology of infectious diseases
• Vaccinology
• Development and evaluation of enteric vaccines
• Risk and protective host factors associated with enteric diseases and in
particular shigellosis
• Study of the association between selected infectious agents
(e.g. Helicobacter pylori, Human Papilloma Virus) and cancer
