Solving 1000-piece jigsaw puzzles for 3D histological atlasing and segmentation of the whole human brain.

Juan Eugenio Iglesias, Group leader at the Martinos Center, Harvard Medical School

Brief abstract:

In this talk, I will summarize our efforts in high-resolution atlasing of the human brain with ex vivo modalities and its application to segmentation of in vivo MRI scans. I will start with our older atlases based on ex vivo MRI and Bayesian segmentation; then move on to histological atlases  based in a semi-automatic fashion; and wrap up with our fully automated pipeline, as well as our modality-independent deep segmentation networks.

Short bio:

Juan Eugenio Iglesias (“Eugenio”) holds MSc degrees in Telecom and Electrical Engineering from the University of Seville (Spain) and the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH, Stockholm, Sweden), respectively. He did his PhD in Biomedical Engineering at the University of California - Los Angeles sponsored by a Fulbright grant. After his PhD, Eugenio did two postdocs: one at the Martinos Center for Biomedical Imaging in Boston, and one at the Basque Center on Cognition, Brain and Language in Spain (sponsored by a Marie Curie fellowship). Eugenio then won a Starting Grant of the ERC and moved to University College London as junior faculty. After five years at UCL, Eugenio moved back to the Martinos Center, where he now leads the Laboratory for Ex vivo Modeling of Neuroanatomy (LEMoN). He remains honorary faculty at UCL, and also holds an affiliate appointment at MIT.
