Arnold Pollak awarded Grand Decoration of Honour in Gold for services to the Austrian Republic

(Vienna, 21 December 2016) Arnold Pollak, retired Head of the Department of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine at MedUni Vienna and Vienna General Hospital, and currently Vice President of the Supreme Health Council, has been awarded the Grand Decoration of Honour in Gold for services to the Austrian Republic.

Arnold Pollak was presented with the award by Health Minister Sabine Oberhauser at the final session of the Supreme Health Council at the Ministry of Health. The term of office of the Supreme Health Council comes to an end on 31 December 2016.

The Supreme Health Council (OSR) is a particularly important advisory body within the Federal Ministry of Health and Women (BMGF) and consists of voluntary members – experts from the fields of medicine, psychology, nursing, science, from medical and pharmaceutical associations, social insurance and public health services.

In addition to its consultancy work and the evaluation of fundamental questions connected with the "state of medical science", the OSR is also responsible for preparing expert opinions and recommendations, if required. The OSR may also propose to the Federal Minister of Health and Women that a recommendation or opinion be published.

About Arnold Pollak
In his capacity as a doctor, professor, divisional head, departmental head and also as member and chairman of numerous committees, Arnold Pollak has shaped university medicine in Vienna over a period of 35 years. As Chairman of the Constituent Assembly of the Medical University of Vienna and Chairman of the Senate, from the time of its foundation in 2004 up until 2012, Arnold Pollak played an important role in "delivering" the Medical University of Vienna into the world. On 1 January 2000, Pollak broadened his hospital role as Head of the Division of Neonatology, Congenital Disorders and Intensive Medicine (as from 1992) to include the overall management of the Department of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine, which he continued to do until September 2014. Because of his great achievements, the outstanding scientist has received many awards, including the Decoration of Honour in Gold for services to the City of Vienna. He is an honorary senator of MedUni Vienna.
