(Vienna, 31 October 2017) Together with Irina Alafuzoff from Uppsala (Sweden), Gabor G. Kovacs, neurology and neuropathology consultant at the Medical University of Vienna, was invited to write for the clinical neuropathology edition of the prestigious "Handbook of Clinical Numerology" series.
Based on more than two decades of medical experience, a passion for translational research and more than 230 publications, he was able to strike the right balance between the details of morphology and clinical interest. Particular attention was paid to producing a book that is useful to neurologists, neuroscientists, neuroradiologists and neuropathologists alike. With their network spanning several continents, the editors have invited an internationally recognised group of experts to describe the whole spectrum of diseases. In line with modern requirements, the book also contains sections on genetics and neuroradiology.
Kovacs personally contributed 5 out of the 37 chapters. "Indeed, neuropathology is the basis for our understanding of neurological diseases and knowledge of it gives doctors the necessary self-confidence required for understanding changes in neuroimaging, selecting the best methods of diagnosing diseases and deciding on the best therapeutic strategy," explains Gabor Kovacs, "For example, many famous and leading neurologists started their careers in Austria in neuropathology or practised both disciplines."

The invitation to edit this book is a further honour for Kovacs, who also had his book on neurodegenerative diseases, published by Cambridge Press in 2015, rated as "Highly Commended" by the British Medical Association.
About Gabor Kovacs
Gabor. G. Kovacs studied medicine at Semmelweis University in Budapest/Hungary (1994). He then trained as a specialist in neurology and neuropathology. He has worked at the Institute of Neurology since 2007 and gained his postdoctoral qualification at MedUni Vienna in 2010. He has been employed by the ÖRPE (Austrian Reference Centre for the Recording and Documentation of Human Prion Diseases) since 2007 and has headed up the Center since 2011. He also works at the Department of Neurology. In addition, he has spent guest residences in Vienna, Edinburgh, Indianapolis and Philadelphia. His research work is primarily centred on neuropathology and pathogenesis of neurodegenerative diseases, including prion diseases. He coordinated an FP7 EU project (www.develage.eu) and is on the editorial board of two leading international journals (Acta Neuropathologica and Neuropathology & Applied Neurobiology).
