Siegfried Kasper is Visiting Professor at the University of Belgrade

(Vienna, 27 June 2017) Siegfried Kasper, Head of the Department of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy at the Medical University of Vienna, has been appointed Visiting Professor by the University of Belgrade.

The University of Belgrade is the oldest and largest university in Serbia. With more than 89,000 students and 4,200 academic staff, it is currently the largest university in southern Europe. The university’s medical faculty opened in 1920. Siegfried Kasper will take part in joint projects with this university involving studies into neuroimaging and neuropsychopharmacology and will invite scientists from Belgrade to MedUni Vienna in order to share experience.

About Siegfried Kasper
Siegfried Kasper, born in Salzburg in 1950, is Professor of Psychiatry and Head of the Department of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy of the Medical University of Vienna. He is a consultant in psychiatry and neurology and is registered as a psychotherapist (psychoanalyst) in the psychotherapy register in Austria and Germany.

Kasper has conducted numerous studies in the fields of psychobiology, neuropsychopharmacology and clinical psychiatry. He has 646 PubMed-listed publications to his name (Google: citation index: 32,403; Hirsch index: 89; i10 index: 508) and has published more than 250 books or book contributions, as well as textbooks and handbooks in various fields of psychiatry, in both German and English.

Siegfried Kasper belongs or has belonged to the board of numerous national and international societies, such as e.g. the International College of Neuropsychopharmacology (CINP), European College of Neuropsychopharmacology (ECNP), European Psychiatric Association (EPA), Austrian Society for Neuropsychopharmacology and Biological Psychiatry (ÖGPB), Austrian Society for Drug Safety in Psychiatry (ÖAMSP) and the Austrian Society for Psychiatry and Psychotherapy (ÖGPP). During the period 2012 – 2016 he was elected onto the Executive Committee of the International College of Neuropsychopharmacology (CINP) and is now President Elect of this society. He is also Chair of the World Psychiatric Association (WPA) Section of Pharmacopsychiatry. He is a fellow of the Royal College of Psychiatrists (FRCP, UK), fellow of the Scandinavian College of Neuro-Psychopharmacology (SCNP), honorary member of the Czech, Romanian and Colombian Societies for Psychopharmacology and Biological Psychiatry and of the Ukrainian and Hungarian Societies for Psychiatry. Furthermore, he has been appointed Honorary/Visiting Professor by  the following universities: University of Hong Kong, China, 2005; Universidad Andrés Bello, Santiago de Chile, Chile, 2014; Aino University in Osaka, Japan, 2015; University of Hiroshima, Japan, 2017 and now Belgrade University School of Medicine, Serbia, 2017. Siegfried Kasper was awarded an honorary doctorate from the universities of Craiova and Cluj-Napoca in Romania. He holds the Grand Decoration of Honour in Silver for Services to the Austrian Republic and the Austrian Cross of Honour for Science and Art, 1st Class, as well as numerous other national and international awards.


Kasper is editor of the World Journal of Biological Psychiatry, the International Journal of Psychiatry in Clinical Practice, field editor for the International Journal of Neuropsychopharmacology, section editor for Expert Opinion on Pharmacotherapy and psychiatry editor of the Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery and Psychiatry. He is on the editorial board of numerous medical journals (54 in total) such as e.g. The Lancet Psychiatry, Journal of Clinical Psychiatry, CNS Spectrums, Journal of Affective Disorders, Pharmacopsychiatry and European Archives of Psychiatry and Clinical Neuroscience.
