Paul Plener takes over Chair of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry

(Vienna, 30 March 2018) Paul Plener will take over the Chair of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at MedUni Vienna as from 1 April 2018. At the same time he will take over as Head of the Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, MedUni Vienna/Vienna General Hospital. Until recently, Plener was Senior Consultant at the Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry/Psychotherapy at the University Hospital in Ulm and held a W3 Chair in Trauma and Acute Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Psychotherapy at the University of Ulm.

For many years Paul Plener has been concerned with the subject of self-harming and suicidal tendencies in adolescents. A second focus of his research is post-traumatic stress disorders in children and adolescents. In addition to epidemiological questions, Plener is also involved in basic research in the field of neurobiology.

About Paul Plener
Paul Plener studied medicine at MedUni Vienna (then the Medical Faculty of the University of Vienna) and from 2005 he held a postdoctoral research post at the Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism (Department of Medicine III). On completing his civilian service, he did his specialist training in child and adolescent psychiatry and psychotherapy at the University of Ulm. He took up a specialist post there in 2011 and thereafter worked first as executive and then as senior consultant at the Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Psychotherapy. Mr Plener graduated and completed his postdoctoral qualification in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Psychotherapy at the University of Ulm. Following a research placement at the Central Institute of Mental Health in Mannheim, he took up the W3 Chair in Trauma and Acute Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Psychotherapy at the university in September 2016. Plener has received numerous scholarships and awards, such as the Donald J. Cohen Fellowship and the Emminghaus Prize, for example. He is on the editorial board of several specialist journals, serves on a number of guideline committees and is a member of numerous international professional societies.
