(Vienna, 07 September 2018) Dominik Roth from the Department of Emergency Medicine at MedUni Vienna/Vienna General Hospital was awarded the Dr. Karl Schleinzer Prize for research in the field of emergency medicine at the 7th Emergency Medicine Symposium.

The prize was awarded, in particular, in recognition of innovative approaches to the treatment of carbon monoxide poisoning. "By treating with a close-fitting ventilation mask, we were able to reduce treatment time significantly compared with conventional techniques. This also improves the chances of complete recovery without any consequent neurological damage," explains Roth.

Research background
Dominik Roth began work as a research assistant at the Department of Emergency Medicine in 2006, as a student in Wolfgang Schreiber's team. Major research interests are carbon monoxide poisoning – where the team first demonstrated the reliability of non-invasive measurement techniques, highlighting the greater prevalence of this life-threatening occurrence – and preclinical emergency medicine. Innovative new methods of airway management by paramedics were established in this field.

Alongside the above-mentioned clinical research, Dominik Roth is also involved in clinical epidemiology and meta-analysis within Harald Herker's team. As part of the worldwide Cochrane network, they have collaborated with international partners in the UK, Scandinavia, Iran, the USA and Hong Kong to produce several leading publications.

Dominik Roth has received many awards for his research activities, including the Hans Bergmann Prize and the Reinhard Malzer Prize and has obtained several competitive grants.

About Dominik Roth
Dominik Roth studied human medicine at the Medical University of Vienna, going on to train as a consultant in the Department of Emergency Medicine.
