Ursula Bailer elected President of the Academy for Eating Disorders

(Vienna/New York, 08 April 2019) Ursula Bailer, Head of the Specialized Outpatient Department for Eating Disorders at the Department of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy, MedUni Vienna/Vienna General Hospital, and President of the Austrian Society for Eating Disorders is to be President of the Academy for Eating Disorders (term of office 2020-2021).

She was also honoured at the International Conference on Eating Disorders 2019 in New York, USA, for her outstanding achievements as a Board Member of the Academy for Eating Disorders. She served as Director of Research Practice Integration from 2016 until 2018 and Secretary from 2018 until 2019.

The Academy for Eating Disorders (AED) is the world's largest, multidisciplinary, professional society for eating disorders. It was established in 1993 and now has more than 1,750 members from 43 countries, all working in the prevention, research and treatment of eating disorders (anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa und binge eating disorder).

The strategic aims of the AED are to gain knowledge about and promote greater understanding of eating disorders, with particular focus on the integration of research and clinical application. The Austrian Society for Eating Disorders has been a partner organisation of the AED since 2011.

About Ursula Bailer
Ursula Bailer studied human medicine at the University of Tübingen and the University of Vienna (1990-1996); in 1997 she wrote her thesis entitled "Treatment strategies in therapy-resistant depression"; from 2002 to 2004 she completed a placement at the University of Pittsburgh, Western Psychiatric Institute & Clinic, Pittsburgh, PA, USA, to research the neurobiological bases of eating disorders as part of an Erwin Schrödinger Fellowship awarded by the Austrian Science Fund (FWF). In 2005 she completed her postdoctoral qualification in psychiatry at the Medical University of Vienna; since 2006 she has been Head of the Specialized Outpatient Department for Eating Disorders (Division of General Psychiatry, Department of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy). From 2009 until 2016 she worked as a professor at the University of California San Diego, Department of Psychiatry, Eating Disorder Treatment and Research Program, where she received a research grant from the National Institute of Health (NIH) for research into "Monoamine Contributions to Neurocircuitry in Eating Disorders".

Ursula Bailer is President of the Austrian Society for Eating Disorders and Fellow of the American College of Neuropsychopharmacology (ACNP). Since 2009, she has worked with the Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (Andreas Karwautz, Gudrun Wagner) to deliver the advanced training course "Eating disorders and associated clinical pictures", which MedUni Vienna offers every year. She has co-organised the annual Congress on Eating Disorders in Alpbach since 2011 (http://www.netzwerk-essstoerungen.at/kongress16/).
