(Vienna/Innsbruck/Graz/Linz, 05 August 2019) A total of 12,960 candidates sat the MedAT entrance exam, held on 5 July, to compete for a place to study medicine in Vienna, Innsbruck, Graz and at the Medical Faculty of Johannes Kepler University (JKU) in Linz. Allocation of the 1,680 university places to study medicine in Austria has now been announced for the coming 2019/2020 academic year: 968 women and 712 men (in percentage terms: 57.62/42.38) secured themselves a university place.
The detailed breakdown of these university places is as follows:
- In 2019, MedUni Vienna has 740 student places in total and, in line with the results, 432 of these were awarded to female students and 308 to male students (58.38% and 41.62% respectively).
- The 400 places at the Medical University of Innsbruck were awarded as follows: 227 to female students (56.75%) and 173 to male students (43.25%).
- The Medical University of Graz has 360 places on offer. The breakdown is 204 to female students and 156 to male students (56.67%/43.33%).
- 180 university places are available at the Medical Faculty of JKU in Linz. 105 places went to female students, 75 to male students (58.33%/41.67%).
Seven years of joint MedAT
This is the 7th time that MedAT has been used as the admissions procedure for human medicine (MedAT-H) and dentistry (MedAT-Z) at all the medical universities.
The entrance exam for human medicine (Med-AT-H) is a multi-part written exam comprising the following elements:
- Basic knowledge test for medical studies: checking existing knowledge from school in the areas of biology, chemistry, physics and mathematics
- Text comprehension: checking reading ability and understanding of texts
- Cognitive skills and abilities: this part of the test consists of five groups of exercises (assembling figures, numerical sequences, language proficiency, memory and retentiveness and recognising implications) and covers basic cognitive skills and abilities.
- Social and emotional skills: this part of the exam consists of a group of exercises on Reading Emotions and Social Decision-Making, covering important aspects of social and emotional skills.
The entrance exam for dentistry (MedAT-Z) is largely identical to MedAT-H, except that, in place of the Text Comprehension section and the group of exercises on Recognising Implications, manual skills are tested by exercises involving wire bending and reproducing shapes.
Allocation of university places
At least 95% of university places are reserved for EU citizens and those with equivalent rights of access to education and at least 75% of places for applicants with an Austrian school leaving certificate. This time, this quota system will only apply to the allocation of university places in human medicine but no longer to dentistry.
