(Vienna, 19 Dec. 2019) The EUHA (European University Hospital Alliance) is the association of nine of the most important university hospitals in Europe, in which MedUni Vienna and AKH Vienna are also involved. This alliance aims to represent the diversity and performance of European university hospitals and to help members to optimally support each other in developing their services for patients throughout Europe. At the General Assembly now held at the Saint-Louis Hospital in Paris, EUHA reaffirmed its objective to play an active role in shaping a sustainable European health policy.

To this end, Anne Bucher, Director-General of DG Santé (Health and Food Safety Directorate-General) of the European Commission, was also invited to an informal meeting in Paris. The role of university hospitals in translating science into clinical practice, the digital transformation of the healthcare system, the role of the European Health Data Space, the European reference networks and the sustainability of the healthcare system were discussed in order to further intensively discuss and tackle the common challenges.

Further development of the EUHA
Furthermore, the EUHA in Paris took a big step towards the further development of the organisation with the adoption of the common statutes. It defines the governance structure and functioning of the EUHA and serves to formalise the Alliance as an association. The General Assembly also agreed to prepare the EUHA’s detailed strategic plan for 2020.

The work plans for the newly established digital health and data network and the creation of a “Clinical Leadership” development programme for 2020 were also adopted. “Effective leadership is repeatedly recommended as a means of making the necessary changes to meet the challenges currently facing our health systems. Despite these important findings, leadership development programmes for top physicians are rare and EUHA clinics are developing their own programmes with a common international component,” a statement said.

The EUHA research network has launched the first initiatives to promote responsible research and innovation (RRI) in the participating university hospitals. The key elements of RRI are drivers of accountability and transparency in the organisation, with direct implications for strategies to strengthen the quality of hospital services and research outcomes and to improve relationships with stakeholders.
