New Master’s degree for professionalising communication and counselling skills starts in Autumn 2019

(Vienna 19 March 2019) The new extra-occupational postgraduate Master’s degree "Professional Interaction and Counseling" will start in Autumn 2019, as a joint offering from the University of Vienna and the Medical University of Vienna. The advanced training course will focus on socially relevant themes such as parent counselling, ethical counselling in prenatal diagnostics and palliative medicine.

People working in the healthcare, psychosocial, educational or commercial fields constantly encounter challenging dialogue scenarios. The university course "Professional Interaction and Counseling" jointly developed by the University of Vienna and the Medical University of Vienna builds on people's existing qualifications, to professionalise and supplement them. The Master’s programme focuses on counselling in selected, ethically demanding and socially relevant areas such as: parent counselling, ethical counselling in prenatal diagnostics, neonatology, oncology and palliative medicine, general genetic counselling, counselling in the context of rare diseases, counselling of migrants and asylum seekers and in stressful work and family situations. Medical aspects are also imparted.

Interdisciplinarity and humanistic and systemic approach
In a large initial subject block, participants not only learn the basic principles of counselling and of a humanistic and systemic counselling approach but also have the opportunity to personalise the weighting of the course to reflect their own specific interests. The second major part of the curriculum focuses on imparting basic psychosocial skills. "The participants benefit from interdisciplinarity, a humanistic and systemic counselling approach and flexible structuring of the syllabus," explains Christian Korunka, Scientific Director of the Master’s programme for the University of Vienna, in a summary of the course. Henriette Löffler-Stastka, Scientific Director of the Medical University of Vienna, adds: "The interdisciplinary advanced training programme provides participants with a scientifically-based action plan, combined with the very latest teaching methods." Leading academic experts and well-known lecturers working in the practical field guarantee the high quality of this advanced training in counselling skills.
