MedUni Vienna mourns the loss of Wolfgang Eigner

All News

(Vienna, 11 March 2019) It was with great dismay that we learned that Univ.Ass. Dr. Wolfgang Eigner had departed this life so young. We were all deeply shocked by the news of his sudden death.

Having completed his studies at the Medical University of Vienna, he was working as a junior doctor at the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Department of Medicine III, and was just about to complete his specialist training. Wolfgang Eigner was an outstanding and extremely committed doctor and scientist, which, despite his youth, had earned him an excellent reputation in the field of chronic inflammatory bowel conditions and coeliac disease, both at home and abroad. He represented young researchers as a member of the European Crohn's and Colitis Organisation (ECCO) and had a successful career in clinical practice, research and education.

By virtue of his personal commitment and character, his influence extended far beyond his own department and his own discipline. As well has his medical skills, Wolfgang Eigner was known for his positive attitude to the world around him. He mastered every challenge in an exemplary fashion and his enthusiastic nature and reliability made him a dear and valued colleague and friend to all those who knew and worked with him. Wolfgang Eigner had the gift of bringing people together and overcoming boundaries. His insatiable zest for life and his drive inspired and motivated us all and will continue to do so for a long time to come.

In Wolfgang Eigner we lose an authentic, helpful, humorous and, above all, highly valued colleague and dear friend. We will all greatly miss his open and endearing nature. He leaves behind a huge void, not only in the department, hospital and university, but most of all in our hearts. We owe him a great debt of gratitude for his work and will always remember him with fondness. Our heartfelt sympathies and condolences go to his family.

Michael Trauner, Head of the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Department of Medicine III
