(Vienna, 12 September 2019) The recently published Times Higher Education World University Ranking confirmed the continuous improvement made by the Medical University of Vienna over the years. In the overall ranking it is once again in joint 201-250th place, whereas it was below 300 only a few years previously. Moreover, together with MedUni Graz, MedUni Vienna is once again second best Austrian university in the ranking, after the University of Vienna (rank 134). This positive trajectory over the last few years is also confirmed by other rankings.
MedUni Vienna obtained the highest scores in the "Citations" category with 90.3 points (out of a maximum of 100). It also scored highly for "International Outlook" with 78.8 points.
The ranking is once again dominated by the leading American and British universities. Oxford, CalTech, Cambridge, Stanford, and MIT occupy places one to five.
The THE University Ranking is based on 13 indicators in the areas of research, teaching, citations, international outlook and procurement of external funding from industry and commerce. It has expanded for 2020 and now includes 1396 listed institutions (as against 1258 in the previous year), including eleven Austrian universities. In 2013, MedUni Vienna was in joint 301-350th place and has constantly been working its way up since then.
Also performing strongly in other rankings
This positive trajectory is also confirmed by the US News Ranking (2018/19). This means that MedUni Vienna has climbed up the Best Global Universities Index from rankings below 300 and, with its current ranking of 196, has now established its place among the 200 best universities in the world. This ranking places particular emphasis on the number and quality of scientific publications and the opinion of the academic community.
MedUni Vienna is notably in 60th place in the "Clinical Medicine" category, which equates to 22nd in Europe and 4th among the German-speaking universities (after Munich, Zürich and Heidelberg).
