Reinhard Windhager is new head of the Department of Orthopaedics

Univ. Prof. Dr. Reinhard Windhager is being given the Professorship of Orthopaedics and Orthopaedic Surgery at MedUni Vienna. At the same time, Windhager is taking over the management of the Department of Orthopaedics.

(Vienna, 12 March 2010) Univ. Prof. Dr. Reinhard Windhager is being given the Professorship of Orthopaedics and Orthopaedic Surgery at MedUni Vienna. At the same time, Windhager is taking over the management of the Department of Orthopaedics.

On 15 Feb. 2010 Univ. Prof. Dr. Reinhard Windhager took over the management of the Department of Orthopaedics. Windhager is a recognised expert in the field of orthopaedic surgery with special focuses on tumour orthopaedics as well as hip, knee and spinal surgery. In the future, students at the Medical University of Vienna will benefit from the experience of the 52-year-old specialist.

Born in Linz, Upper Austria, Windhager completed his specialist training in orthopaedics in the 1980s at the then Medical School of Vienna University. During his interlude in Graz, where he was active following his appointment in 1997, Windhager also impressed with his organisational skills: under his leadership the orthopaedic unit, which in Graz had formed part of the Surgery Division, became a separate Department of Orthopaedics with a complete clinical spectrum.

The former President of the Central European Orthopaedic Congress also has ambitious goals for the Vienna Department. He is planning to enhance the international orientation of clinical expertise by raising scientific visibility and increasing productivity regarding publications. “The focus is going to be on interdisciplinary musculoskeletal research”, explains Windhager. In addition, the newly appointed Professor of Orthopaedics and Orthopaedic Surgery wants to further expand the research laboratory.

Windhager has not only written a large number of scientific articles, he has also made a name for himself with his editorial activities, between 1998 and 2003, for example, Windhager was a member of the advisory council of the orthopaedics magazine (“Zeitschrift für Orthopädie”), in addition he has been co-editor of the medical journal Z ORTHOP UNFALL since 2003.
