Comprehensive Cancer Centre (CCC) officially commissioned

(Vienna, 12 July 2010) Recently the coordinating body of the CCC (Univ. Prof. Dr. Maria Sibilia, Univ. Prof. Dr. Christoph Zielinski and Univ. Prof. Dr. Michael Gnant) was officially commissioned by Rector Wolfgang Schütz and Vienna General Hospital AKH Director Reinhard Krepler to set up the Comprehensive Cancer Centre. This centre, which is unique in Austria and is based on the National Cancer Institute in the USA, will therefore be able to start work and directly carry out tasks by late autumn 2010.

The aim is to pool together all research, clinical and teaching activities in oncology at the Medical University of Vienna and the AKH, with great attention paid to interdisciplinary patient care, carrying out clinical trials and translational research. By setting up tumour boards and research clusters there will, in the future, be an ideal network of research, science, teaching and patient care.
"With all disciplines seated at one table and providing their entire expertise, the channels of supply for the patients will also become shorter," explains Christoph Zielinski.

Close cooperation with other Vienna institutions with a scientific and clinic interest in the subject of "cancer" is also planned. At the end of September there will be an internal kick-off event at MedUni Vienna / AKH Vienna. MedUni Vienna will be setting up its own intranet page with information on the CCC, and work is also being done on an internet presentation. You will find out more on this here soon.
