(Vienna, 2 Nov. 2010) At the Fifth Vienna Seminar of Nobel Laureates, the acting President of Médecins sans Frontières (Nobel Peace Prize winner 1999), Unni Karunakara, will give a lecture at MedUni Vienna on the topic “Emergency Medical Assistance”, which will be followed by a panel discussion.
On 3 and 4 November 2010 the Fifth Vienna Seminar of Nobel Laureates will be held. Every year lectures and panel discussions on different thematic areas of focuses by Nobel laureates and top representatives of excellent institutions take place within the framework at this event. This series of seminars will emphasise Vienna's importance as a centre of Central Europe and as a home of top-level scientific achievements. Under this year’s motto “Policy of Peace and Human Rights” various lectures and discussions will be held at Vienna University, the Medical University of Vienna, in the large Festival Hall of the Vienna city hall and in the WKO Sky Lounge of the Austrian Federal Economic Chamber.
On 4 November the Médecins sans Frontières President Unni Karunakara will hold a lecture at MedUni Vienna. After the official opening and lecture, there is the possibility to participate in a top-notch panel discussion in which – as well as Karunakara – also the MedUni Vienna’s Rector Wolfgang Schütz, Elisabeth Chalupa-Gartner from the Medical University of Vienna International (MUVI), Reinhard Dörflinger from Médecins sans Frontières as well as Ursula Wiedermann-Schmidt, Head of the “Geographic Medicine” Research Department at MedUni Vienna.
Other Nobel Peace Prize winners at the two-day event include Mohamed ElBaradei (in 2005 “for his efforts to prevent nuclear energy from being used for military purposes and to ensure that nuclear energy, for peaceful purposes, is used in the safest possible way”), José Ramos-Horta (in 1996 he shared the Prize with Carlos Filipe Ximenes Belo for his sustained efforts to find a diplomatic solution to the conflict of East Timor) and Melissa Fleming as UNHCR Spokesperson (United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees), which was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1954 and 1981.
