Professorship of Anaesthesiology and Perioperative Management

From 15 November Univ. Prof. Dr. Klaus Markstaller will be taking up the Professorship of Anaesthesiology and Perioperative Management at MedUni Vienna. At the same time he is also becoming the head of the Division of General Anaesthesia and Intensive Care.

(Vienna, 15 November 2010) From 15 November Univ. Prof. Dr. Klaus Markstaller will be taking up the Professorship of Anaesthesiology and Perioperative Management at MedUni Vienna. At the same time he is also becoming the head of the Division of General Anaesthesia and Intensive Care.

Univ. Prof. Dr. Markstaller worked as a senior physician at the Anaesthesiology Clinic of University Medicine, Johannes Gutenberg University of Mainz, where he also had an executive function as deputy head of the Operations Management unit.

With his new professorship Markstaller wants to make a substantial and recognisable contribution to help MedUni Vienna further expand on its leading international position in clinical practice, research and teaching. With the Division of General Anaesthesia and Intensive Care Markstaller wants to establish a high-quality academic international network in research and teaching. He is also planning the management of international experimental and clinical study projects. With his surgical partners Markstaller wants to optimise perioperative management.

Markstaller's research activities so far have included interdisciplinary projects such as "New procedures for the functional analysis of the lung with acute lung failure" and the research group "Temporal and regional V/P analysis of the lung" of the German Research Foundation (DFG). He is currently researching "New pathological mechanisms for acute lung failure and multi-organ failure". For years his research work has been characterised in particular by close cooperation with other specialist fields such as radiology, pathology and surgery.

Klaus Markstaller says: "I will be happy if the field of anaesthesiology can continue to build on and help MedUni Vienna's outstanding reputation both in the clinical area and also in research in the future.“

Univ. Prof. Dr. Klaus Markstaller, born in 1969 in Nuremberg, received his doctorate with magna cum laude in 1998 at the University of Ulm, in 2004 he qualified as a professor in the subject of anaesthesiology and in 2007 he was appointed University Professor of Anaesthesiology at Johannes Gutenberg University of Mainz. From 2001 to 2002 Markstaller completed a research stay at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia and from 2004 to 2007 he worked at the Inselspital Hospital of the University of Berne as a senior physician and research coordinator at the Anaesthesiology Clinic.
Markstaller is a member of a number of organisations including the scientific advisory board of the European Society of Anaesthesiologists (ESA) and also a spokesman for a large DFG project. As a member of an inventors' association he has also already submitted two patent applications in Germany and the USA.
Markstaller has already received various research awards and as well as his own publications he also works as a reviewer and editor of scientific journals, and he is also a reviewer of the German Research Foundation and the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation.
