(Vienna, 10 Jan. 2011) On 1 January Univ. Prof. Dr. Christian Singer took over the Professorship of Clinical-Translational Gynaecologic Oncology at MedUni Vienna. This is underlining both the importance of translational medicine and also the “cancer research” research cluster at MedUni Vienna once again.
Christian Singer has been working at MedUni Vienna (Division of Special Gynaecology) since 1997. In his research he covers areas including the role of stromal-epithelial interactions in breast cancer and also new procedures for predicting the response to trastuzumab in metastasised breast cancer. Another focus of his scientific work is hereditary breast and ovarian cancer. Singer’s main concern is to make the knowledge from basic research on the causes of mammacarcinoma, the progression and metastasis clinically usable for diagnosis, prognosis and therapy. Singer also currently works as a spokesman for the genetics and epigenetics cluster at the Comprehensive Cancer Centre of MedUni Vienna.
On the one hand the appointment of Univ. Prof. Dr. Christian Singer underlines the increasing importance of translational matters in the treatment of gynaecological malignancies, in particular breast cancer, and on the other hand this professorship also helps make a lasting improvement to the “cancer research” research cluster in the field of gynaecologic oncology as described in the development plan of the Medical University of Vienna.
After last year’s integration of the Division of Special Gynaecology into the Division of General Gynaecology and Gynaecologic Oncology, the appointment of the breast specialist is a clear sign of the central importance of senology within this specialist field. Singer’s appointment is therefore a further boost for the breast health centre at MedUni Vienna and represents an important step in the continued development of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at MedUni Vienna.
Short biography:
Christian Singer, 43, studied medicine at Innsbruck University and habilitated in 2002 at the Vienna Medical Faculty. In 2003 he was appointed University Professor of Gynaecology and Obstetrics. Singer can already look back on a number of stays abroad. From 1991-1993 he completed a post-doc fellowship at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., and another post-doc fellowship took him to the Catholic University of Leuven where he worked from 1995 to 1997. Among other tasks, he was also active in Kuala Lumpur at the hospital of MedUni Vienna’s subsidiary company MUVI as a Senior Clinical Specialist. From 2003 to 2005 he completed a public health study course at Harvard University School of Public Health, Harvard University, Boston. From 2008 he was deputy head of the Division of Special Gynaecology. As part of the integration of the Division into the Division of General Gynaecology and Gynaecologic Oncology, Singer has been head of the working group on senology since October 2009.
Singer has already received various research awards and as well as his own publications he also works as a reviewer and co-editor of scientific journals. He is a member of the board in organisations including the Austrian Society of Gynaecology and Obstetrics, the Austria Breast Cancer Study Group and the Austrian Society of Senology.
