In Europe, out of a total population of 466 million, about 127 million people suffer from a neurological, psychiatric or mental disease. Neuropsychiatric disorders are the most common cause of physical and mental disability and the second leading cause of death worldwide. The Comprehensive Center for Clinical Neurosciences and Mental Health (C3NMH) focuses on these disorders and consolidates the manifold skills of the various departments and divisions of the Medical University of Vienna and the University Hospital Vienna.

The founding organizational units of the Comprehensive Center for Clinical Neurosciences and Mental Health are:

  • the Department of Neurology,
  • the Division of Neuropathology and Neurochemistry at the Department of Neurology,
  • the Department of Neurosurgery,
  • the Division of General Psychiatry at the Department of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy,
  • the Division of Social Psychiatry at the Department of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy;
  • the Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry,
  • the Department of Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy and
  • the Division of Neuroradiology and Musculoskeletal Radiology at the Department of Biomedical Imaging and Image-guided Therapy.

The increasing number of neuropsychiatric diseases due to demographic developments as well as diagnostic and therapeutic milestones pose an enormous challenge for cutting-edge medical care and its structures as well as for graduate and postgraduate education, recruitment and continuous training of all health professions involved. In addition, the combination of modern diagnostic methods and the clinical/scientific application of digitalisation and artificial intelligence opens up new and even unexpected fields of activity in clinical neurosciences and mental health, especially with regard to the diagnostic, curative and preventive requirements of precision medicine.

Therefore, the clinical and scientific potential for development described above and the associated health policy dimension require joint strategies to further develop university-based multi-professional high-end medicine as well as competitive cutting-edge research and excellent teaching in the field of clinical neurosciences and mental health. The vision of the Comprehensive Center for Clinical Neurosciences and Mental Health is to fulfil this ambition by developing and sustainably implementing its strategic goals. Close cooperation with all organisational units at the Medical University of Vienna that are dedicated to clinical and/or basic research into the functions and diseases of the brain and the entire nervous system is essential for this.
