Research interests

My main research interest is reconstructive knee surgery with main focus on ACL reconstruction techniques.

The research group around Priv. Doz. DDr. Thomas Tiefenböck, MSc, Assoc. Prof. Priv. Doz. Dr. Marcus Hofbauer and Priv. Doz. DDr. Stephan Payr, focused on the further development of the operative treatment of anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction with attention to the different transplants, suture techniques as well as the biomechanical and radiological changes.

The projects carried out to date have been able to shed light on the problem of synthetic tendon replacement materials, significant differences in graft behavior when using different preparation techniques, the role of suture diameter for graft stability, and also the possibilities of augmentation in anterior cruciate ligament surgery.

Lastly, the research focus is on the quadriceps tendon as a primary graft for anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction. Here, clinical as well as biomechanical studies for evaluation are currently carried out.

Techniques, methods & infrastructure

The human specimens used are provided by the Center of Anatomy, Medical University of Vienna, in close cooperation with Ap. Priv. Doz. Mag.a DDr.in Lena Hirtler.

All biomechancial testings are carried out at the Technical University of Vienna, in close cooperation with Dr. Thomas Koch.

The imaging, takes place at the high field MRI center of the Medical University of Vienna under the direction of Prof. Dr. Siegfried Trattnig.
