Entry to Austria & Residence in Austria

  • Stays up to 3 months max.

EU/EEA and Swiss nationals are generally permitted to stay in  EU member countries for up to three months.

  • Stays longer than 3 months

If you are staying in Austria for more than three months, you have to inform the competent residence authority in Austria in person within four months after your arrival and apply for a confirmation of registration ("Anmeldebescheinigung").

Incoming students who were enrolled at MedUni Vienna for the duration of their stay can download the required enrolment certificate from the MedUni Vienna student platform "MedCampus".

Attention: Non-compliance with this regulation can lead to a fine of up to 250 Euro!
Please also note that this registration is required in addition to the registration with the registration office (see section "Mandatory residence registration" below).

Students who are participating in an Union or multilateral mobility programme (e.g. Erasmus+, OeAD scholarship) or for whom an agreement between two or more higher education institutions is in place AND who are in possession of a valid residence title "Student" of another EU member country (except the United Kingdom, Ireland and Denmark) are allowed to enter Austria without visa and to stay in Austria for up to 360 days.

For those students, the host institution has to issue the document Confirmation of participation. Accepted incoming students need to contact the International Office in this matter: exchange-incomings@muv.ac.at

a) stays up to 6 months max.

Visa C or Visa D

Incoming students who are planning to stay in Austria for less than six months can apply for a Visa C (for stays up to 90 days) or for a Visa D (for stays from 91 days up to a maximum of 6 months) at the competent Austrian diplomatic mission in their country of residence. These visas are free of charge.

For stays up to 90 days/three months, there are entitlements to enter Austria without a visa, which may apply.

Accepted incoming students can download their official “Letter of Invitation” (proofing the participation in a mobility programme or the existence of an interinstitutional cooperation agreement for the exchange) from the MedUni Vienna application platform "Mobility Online" (details will be provided by the International Office)

b) stays longer than 6 months

Residence Permit – Student

Students who are studying at an Austrian higher education institution within the framework of a Union or multilateral mobility programme or an inter-institutional agreement can obtain a “Residence Permit – Student”.

In the majority of cases, applications have to be submitted to the competent Austrian diplomatic mission in the country of residence where the applicants have to wait for their decision (in this case a longer processing time is to be expected).

Accepted incoming students can download their official “Letter of Invitation” (proofing the participation in a mobility programme or the existence of an interinstitutional cooperation agreement for the exchange) from the MedUni Vienna application platform "Mobility Online" (details will be provided by the International Office).

Mandatory residence registration

Mandatory for ALL incoming students

Anybody who takes up residence in Austria (Austrians, EU/EEA nationals, nationals of third countries) has to register with the registration office at their place of residence within three working days.:

You will need the following documents for your registration:

·        Travel document

·        Birth certificate

·        Marriage certificate and/or proof of academic titles as applicable

·        Registration form (must be signed both by the landlord/landlady and by the tenant)
 

Before leaving Austria you have to cancel your registration.
