Aim and Qualification Profile of the Medicine Degree Programme

The aim of the Medicine degree programme is to educate medical doctors with a high level of professional and human competence.

The Medicine degree programme at the Medical University of Vienna serves as professional qualification for the profession of physician in all specialties - in theory and in practice. It has the aim of training the future graduates to become competent doctors of medicine (Dr. med. univ.).

In order to achieve these goals, the future doctors have to be taught knowledge, competences, skills and professional demeanour within the appropriate curriculum with adequate methods and this has to be evaluated accordingly.


Qualification Profile of the Graduates

Basic Knowledge and Comprehension of

  • the structures and mechanisms of the female and the male body in all its phases of development, in health and in illness from the molecular level to the overall organism
  • the human psyche and its phases of development in health and illness
  • the interaction of the individual with society and the environment
  • the aims, structures and processes of health promotion, prevention, diagnostics, curative as well as palliative therapy, care and rehabilitation from acute to chronic diseases
  • the ethical principles of medicine
  • the methods of medical-scientific research
  • medical informatics, medical technology, medical law, health economics, quality assurance and process management in health care as well as the Austrian health system

Detailed knowledge and comprehension of

  • More frequent or more acute health disorders and disease patterns as well as their treatment concepts
  • special areas of medicine to be chosen by the student (electives of the curriculum, thesis)
  • To efficiently note the specific anamnesis and the relevant status, in a problem-oriented and correct way and while being considerate with the patients
  • Recognise emergencies, evaluate them correctly and apply extended first aid measures
  • consider important differential diagnoses, to justify thoughts and create a targeted examination plan, in order to achieve a diagnosis, if possible
  • propose a reasoned treatment concept for frequent diseases under stationary or ambulant conditions
  • advise patients of any age on ways to promote their health

Mastering those clinical skills, to which doctors are authorised at that point of their training (e.g. wound dressing, blood draw, clearly state the requirements for further examinations, etc.)

  • Inform patients and their relatives on diagnostic procedures, the diagnosis as well as therapeutic procedures in a comprehensible and empathic way and to motivate them to actively cope with their disease
  • To notify patients and their relatives of bad news in a considerate way and be able to deal with the emotions thus triggered
  • To communicate clearly, politely and effectively with colleagues (incl. the nursing staff and related professions) - especially with the aim of enabling comprehension, cooperation and mutual learning
  • To communicate clearly in a clinical and scientific context - orally as well as in writing
  • To be able to communicate professionally in English
  • To be able to efficiently use information technologies
  • Willingness to apply the ethical principles of medicine in practice and research
  • Respect and honesty towards patients and colleagues
  • Realistic assessment of one's own skills, potential and limitations as well the willingness to draw the appropriate conclusions from this
  • Willingness to take responsibility and accuracy
  • Willingness to appropriately react to the continuous changes in the medical sciences and the society as a whole and to contribute to the advancement of medicine in theory and practice
  • Willingness to respond to gender-based, social and cultural differences, if they are medically relevant, to actively counter a lack of information and to avoid stereotypical behaviour

Research competence

  • The skill to ask relevant research questions, formulate hypotheses and to work in research under supervision
  • The skill to determine the relevant information, connect with knowledge from other areas and creatively apply this to solve problems
  • The skills to evaluate information, situation and concepts matter-of-factly, logically and critically
  • The ability for self-directed extra-occupational learning

Social and Organisational Competences

  • Readiness and ability to work in a team and cooperate, lead, delegate and resolve conflicts - especially in the framework of interdisciplinary cooperation
  • Ability for self-management and ability to organise assistance if needed

Knowledge Competence

  • Readiness and ability to serve as role model
  • Basic ability to impart health-relevant knowledge in a comprehensive way to healthy and sick people and to promote the appropriate attitude and behaviour.
