Assistant (postgraduate) in Experimental Resuscitation Research (m/f/x)

The Department of Emergency Medicine is looking for a full-time (40 hours per week) Assistant (postgraduate) in Experimental Resuscitation Research (m/f/x) (expected from 1/9/2026). This is a contract for a duration of 4 years.
We are seeking a highly motivated and enthusiastic PhD student to join our research team dedicated to advancing Cardiac Arrest (CA) and Reperfusion research. Our work focuses on exploring innovative therapeutic approaches for sudden cardiac arrest and resuscitation, with a deep dive into the underlying pathophysiological mechanism and pathways that drive recovery and injury.
This doctoral project offers a unique opportunity to lead a cutting-edge investigation into the pathophysiology and treatment of ischemia/reperfusion injury within a four-year PhD fellowship. The candidate will spearhead an experimental research program focused on sudden cardiac arrest and the implementation of ECPR (Extracorporeal Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) in advanced porcine and rodent models. Beyond the technical demands of surgical modeling and ECMO support, the project is designed to provide comprehensive training in translational science, ranging from high-resolution histological imaging to the biochemical analysis of myocardial signaling pathways. Over this four-year period, the PhD student will be supported in developing a robust scientific portfolio, including lead-author publications and international conference presentations, with the ultimate goal of identifying novel therapeutic strategies to improve long-term survival and neurological recovery in cardiac arrest survivors.
Your Tasks
- Together, we will work on modelling CA and resuscitation in animal models, develop new therapy strategies and perform research on pathomechanisms of CA and reperfusion.
- We will jointly conduct experiments in the field of resuscitation research and development of therapies to improve resuscitation and outcome under the guidance of highly experienced veterinary and human physicians, and care for the animals to ensure ethically correct animal experiments taking into account the three R’s.
Your Profile
- Academic Background: You hold a Master’s degree (or equivalent) in a relevant field such as Human Medicine, Veterinary Medicine, or Biomedicine; Candidates with advanced degrees in Physiology, Cardiovascular Sciences, Neuroscience, Molecular Biology, Pharmacology, or Biomedical Engineering are also highly encouraged to apply. A strong foundation in systemic pathophysiology and an interest in translational research are essential.
- Research Interest: You are passionate about life sciences and curious about the complex mechanisms of ischemia/reperfusion injury.
- Technical Expertise: You have experience with – or a strong desire to master – experimental models of cardiac arrest in rats and pigs.
- Resuscitation Science: You are particularly interested in ECPR (Extracorporeal Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) and ECMO as cutting-edge methods for hemodynamic support and resuscitation.
- Methodological Versatility: While your foundation may be in surgical/experimental models, you are eager to expand your skillset into histological and biochemical analysis to bridge the gap between whole-organ function and molecular pathways.
- Scientific Rigor: You are experienced in scientific writing, systematic literature searches, and the critical evaluation of data.

The minimum monthly salary for this position (Uni-KV, VerwGr. B1) is currently Euro 3.776,- gross (14x per year) on a full-time basis and may be increased by taking into account relevant previous experience and other salary components related to the specificities of the job.
