With around 6.500 employees and 8.600 students, the Medical University of Vienna is one of the largest top-level biomedical research and teaching institutions in Europe. The Department of Medicine II is looking for a part-time (30 hours per week) PhD-Position: Machine Learning / Medical Imaging (m/f/x) (with immediate effect). This position is offered for a duration of 3 years.

 

Join the AICARD Research Project “Transforming Cardiac Research: Visual Exploration and AI Prediction Modeling of Real-Life, Multi-Modal Data” as a PhD-Position in machine learning. You will work alongside leading experts at the Computational Imaging Research Lab (CIR) and the Department of Cardiology at the Medical University of Vienna and the Visualization and Data Analysis Research Group (VDA) at the University of Vienna.

 

Your Tasks

Your mission is to develop multi-modal AI methods to integrate MRI, echocardiography, ECG, longitudinal EHRs, and other clinical modalities. By disentangling technical noise, physiological variability, and disease-specific patterns, your models will empower cardiologists to track disease progression, identify patient phenotypes, and predict clinical outcomes. The resulting insights will be made accessible through an interactive visual­ analytics platform, developed in close collaboration with our visualization experts, enabling personalized cardiac care.

Your Profile

  • Education: You hold (or will soon complete) an M.Sc. (or equivalent) in Computer Science or a related discipline
  • ML expertise: You have strong programming and deep learning experience (e.g., PyTorch, TensorFlow), backed by a substantial project (thesis, paper, etc.)
  • Analytical mindset: You have a passion for solving complex problems and a solid foundation in math/stats/ML theory
  • Teamwork and Communication: You enjoy interdisciplinary collaboration and are enthusiastic about mentoring and sharing knowledge with peers and students. You communicate clearly in spoken and written English. German is not required but is considered a bonus

The minimum monthly salary for this position (Uni-KV, VerwGr. B1) is currently Euro 2.786,-- gross (14x per year) on a part-time basis and may be increased by taking into account relevant previous experience and other salary components related to the specificities of the job.
