 aria Sibilia\n\nAbout the speaker:\n Saverio Tardito is a cancer scientist
  with the ultimate goal to halt tumour progression in patients by targetin
 g metabolic reactions. His Oncometabolism Lab at the Cancer Research UK Sc
 otland Institute employs state-of-the-art mass spectrometry-based metabolo
 mics\, refined cellular and murine models relevant to human pathology to i
 dentify metabolic reactions that confer tissue-selective advantages to can
 cer cells.\n\nRethinking Our Approach To Cancer Metabolism To Deliver Pati
 ent Benefit\n\nGlutamine is the most abundant amino acid in human blood\, 
 and glutamine-dependent reactions directly impact cancer initiation and pr
 ogression\, leading to\n the development of clinically-safe inhibitors of 
 glutamine metabolism for cancer treatment.\n\nIn mammals\, glutamine is un
 iquely synthesized by the enzyme glutamine synthetase. By applying untarge
 ted metabolomics in vivo\, Tardito’s lab recently\n demonstrated that he
 patic glutamine synthetase produces N5-methylglutamine\, a glutamine analo
 gue previously undescribed in mammalian metabolism (Villar et\n al. Nat Ch
 em Biol 2023). Intriguingly\, elevated levels of N5-methylglutamine in uri
 ne have been found to predict tumour burden and oncogenic drivers in a\n m
 ouse model of liver cancer. Furthermore\, ongoing unpublished work from Ta
 rdito’s lab shows that the oncogenic WNT activation in the liver imposes
  a\n metabolic vulnerability that can be targeted for hepatocellular carci
 noma therapy.
