MLA AWARDS REMINDER
SEPTEMBER 1, 1994 DEADLINE FOR NOMINATIONS
Each year, members of the Medical Library Association
honor individual achievement of high order in specific
areas of librarianship. Nominations are invited for
some awards; for others, qualified individuals may
submit papers. Although all awards are considered
annually, they are given only when nominees and
candidates clearly meet or exceed requirements. For
further information on the procedures for nomination
and application, contact the Professional Development
Department, Medical Library Association, Suite. 300, Six

The MLA Awards Committee administers the general
awards of the association. To honor those who have rendered
distinguished service to libraries and librarianship, the
Awards Committee invites you to nominate colleagues for
the following awards:
Award for Excellence and Achievement in Hospital
Librarianship: This award, presented for the first time in
1991, is given to a member of the association who has made
significant contributions to the profession in the area of
overall distinction or leadership in hospital library
administration or service; production of a definitive
publication related to hospital librarianship, teaching,
research, or advocacy; or the development or application of
innovative technology to hospital librarianship.
Estelle Brodman Award for the Academic Medical
Librarian of the Year: This award recognizes an academic
medical librarian at the midcareer level who demonstrates
significant achievement, the potential for leadership, and
continuing excellence. The award was established in 1986
with a gift from Irwin H. Pizer.
Louise Darling Medal for Distinguished Achievement in
Collection Development in the Health Sciences: The medal
is presented annually in recognition of distinguished
achievement in collection development in the health
sciences. Established in 1987, the medal is sponsored by
Ballen Booksellers International, Inc.
Janet Doe Lectureship: The lecturer is an individual chosen
by the Medical Library Association for his or her unique
perspective on the history or philosophy of medical
librar-ianship. The Doe Lectureship was established in 1966
with an anonymous donation. The lecture is presented at
the annual meeting and is subsequently published in the
Bulletin of the Medical Library Association.
Ida and George Eliot Prize: This prize is presented annually
for a work published in the preceding calendar year and has
been judged most effective in furthering medical librarian-
ship. First presented in 1962, the award is currently spon-
sored by Login Brothers Book Company, Chicago, IL.
Marcia C. Noyes Award: This award is the highest
professional distinction of the Medical Library Association.
Established in 1947, the award recognizes a career that has
resulted in lasting, outstanding contributions to medical
librarianship.
Frank Bradway Rogers Information Advancement Award:
This award is presented annually in recognition of
outstanding contributions for the application of technology to
the delivery of health sciences information, to the science of
information, or to the facilitation of the delivery of health
sciences information. The award, sponsored by the Institute
for Scientific Information, was first presented in 1973.
Fellows and Honorary Members: Fellows are selected for
sustained and outstanding contributions to the field of health
sciences librarianship and to the advancement of the
purposes for which MLA stands. Honorary members are
nonmembers who have make outstanding contributions
to the advancement of the purposes of the association
Qualified individuals may submit papers for the following
awards:
Murray Gottlieb Prize: This prize is awarded annually for
the best unpublished essay on the history of medicine and
allied sciences written by a health sciences librarian. The
Gottlieb Prize was established in 1956 by Ralph and Jo
Grimes of the Old Hickory Bookshop,Brinklow, MD, to
recognize and stimulate health sciences librariansU
interest in the history of medicine.
Rittenhouse Award: This award is presented annually for
the best unpublished paper on medical librarianship written
by a student in an ALA-accredited school of library science
or a trainee in an internship in medical librarianship.
