Master thesis projects

We are always looking for curiosity-driven and motivated master students!

Currently, we have a collaboration project with KML Vision. The industry partner is specializing in microscopy image analysis using artificial intelligence (AI). Our current project is funded by the Austrian Research Promotion Agency (FFG) and focusses on novel methods of microscopic leukocyte analysis with a thematic focus on inflammatory processes.

A postdoctoral fellow is engaged in the project and will guide master students in the lab. The thesis will be done at the Institute of Vascular Biology and Thrombosis Research, Medical University of Vienna, which provides an excellent scientific environment with a professional infrastructure (including confocal and high-end epifluorescence microscopy on several machines from Nikon, Olympus, and Zeiss, as well as flow cytometry and cell sorting etc.). The payment of a research stipend is possible after 6 months.

A wide spectrum of research methods is already established in the group, which has a strong team spirit of sharing expertise and resources.

Tasks:

  • Histological and fluorescence stainings of samples

  • Microscopy (transmitted light and fluorescence) and slide scanning

  • Handling of mice (inflammatory mouse model)

  • Data handling on the IKOSA platform and communication with the AI-experts

Profile:

  • We are looking for highly motivated students (m/f/d) with a strong interest in life sciences, who should have already good general lab experience

  • Applicants should have a background in molecular biology and/or biochemistry

  • They should be willing to integrate into an international English-speaking lab environment and to interact with the image analysis specialists from KML Vision.

Start: anytime.

Duration: 6 months (minimum) with the option of an extension on a paid basis. Maximum: 12 months
