Due to its traditional combination of fundamental virological research, applied medical-virological research, viral diagnostics and university and postgraduate teaching, MedUni Vienna’s Center for Virology constitutes a center of excellence for all current aspects of medically oriented virology.
The viral diagnostics area is ISO 9001 certified and is a special service offered by the Department, one which is extensively used by external customers (hospitals, laboratories, registered doctors) as well as industrial partners in the context of studies and trials.
An important part of the Department's activities are dedicated to university teaching, where the Department’s specialism is reflected in various parts of the medical curriculum. The training covers all areas of virology and includes lectures, practicals, special seminars, elective courses and dissertations. In keeping with the interdisciplinary nature of virology, natural science students (e.g. microbiology, genetics, molecular biology) also produce their dissertations and theses within the Department.
