Eine Vielzahl von Forschungsinitiativen und wissenschaftlichen Errungenschaften an der Medizinischen Universität Wien entstammen dem Forschungsbereich Immunologie/Allergologie/Infektiologie. Um dieses erfolgreiche Forschungsfeld noch weiter zu stärken, definierte die MedUni Wien in ihrem Entwicklungsplan 2009 Immunologie/Allergologie/Infektiologie als eines ihrer vier Hauptforschungscluster. Als organisatorische Maßnahme wurde mit 1. Jänner 2010 das Zentrum für Pathophysiologie, Infektiologie und Immunologie (Center for Pathophysiology, Infectiology and Immunology - CePII) gegründet, welches den Großteil der Forschungsgruppen des theoretischen Bereichs auf diesen Forschungsgebieten konzentriert. Diese Forschungsgruppen sind innerhalb des Zentrums thematisch in vier Institute substrukturiert, um die Ressourcen besser zu nutzen und gemeinsame Aktivitäten besser zu planen:

The MCCA PhD-Program represents a self-contained, international PhD thesis program, which is dedicated to educate and promote the best possible PhD students in the fields of molecular, cellular and clinical allergology. Students who decide to pursue their PhD degree within the MCCA PhD-Program will have the exceptional possibility of obtaining profound insights into cutting-edge clinical medicine while at the same time becoming deeply immersed into pertinent questions of molecular and cellular allergology. Depending on the track the actual PhD-student’s project will be located in, aspects of either molecular, cellular or clinical allergology will be the dominating theme. Compulsory training within the two complementary tracks will round-up education and training of individual students and ensure that a holistic view of the entire discipline, i.e. allergology, is obtained eventually. The program is very attractive because it offers three years of full salary and a budget for materials to the PhD-students. The MCCA PhD-Program is funded by the Austrian Science Fund (FWF) and receives support from the Medical University of Vienna and the Veterinary University of Vienna.
