Short description of CLINS

Purpose of CLINS: To accredit early stage medical scientists with scientific competence which enables them to improve biomedical practice by means of research
Neuroscience is a main focus of research and high-end medicine at the Medical University Vienna.

The aim of Clinical Neurosciences is innovation in prevention, diagnosis, and therapy of neurological and psychiatric diseases, and a better fundamental understanding of these conditions.
In this sense, the applied doctoral program Clinical Neurosciences (CLINS) addresses a wide scope of scientific challenges related to neurological, psychiatric and neuro-muscular disorders in fetus, children, and adults.
Interdisciplinary interaction of diagnostic and therapeutic disciplines in combination with basic biomedical research is a key element of the program.
In this way, CLINS aims to provide early stage scientists with scientific competence that enables them to improve biomedical and clinical practice by means of research.

Relevance of the doctoral degree for an academic career at the Medical University of Vienna
The doctorate (University codes N790 or N094) is an essential prerequisite for an academic career at the Medical University of Vienna according to the newly implemented (by Oct 1st, 2009) career model.

For graduates of human medicine studies (University code: N202) special regulations for integration of medical specialisation (Facharztausbildung) and doctoral studies exist. Careful attention needs to be paid to these regulations in order to avoid drop-out of the tenure track for formal reasons. Doctoral candidates need to clarify their individual situation at the beginning of their doctoral studies by the help of their supervisors and the CLINS coordinator.
