The sculpture of Sigmund Freud is also a stop on the audio tour

(Vienna, 27 October 2026) The Medical University of Vienna is now offering a digital audio guide that allows visitors to explore the MedUni Vienna campus and its surroundings at their own pace. Via the Hearonymus smartphone app, the tour takes visitors to 21 selected stops that tell the stories of key figures from the Viennese medical schools, groundbreaking scientific discoveries and the development of the University Hospital Vienna. Works of art, historic buildings and current research sites are also part of the tour. The audio guide enables visitors to discover more than 650 years of medical history individually and at their own pace.

The tour links the history of Viennese medicine with the present and future of medical research. The stops include, amongst others, monuments to Ignaz Semmelweis, Sigmund Freud and the Nobel laureates Karl Landsteiner and Eric Kandel. Whilst Semmelweis made a decisive contribution to modern infection prevention with his findings on hand hygiene, Landsteiner laid an essential foundation for safe blood transfusions with his discovery of blood groups. Less well-known figures and their scientific achievements are also highlighted.

In addition to the historical sites, the audio guide explores modern medicine and current developments on campus. The tour takes visitors, amongst other places, to the Eric Kandel Institute - Center for Precision Medicine and the Center for Translational Medicine, which exemplify the close link between basic research and clinical application. The University Hospital Vienna (AKH), as a central hub for patient care, research and teaching, is also featured.

History of Medicine, Art and Remembrance
Another focus of the tour is the connection between medicine, art and social responsibility. The stops include the ‘Memorial Against Forgetting’ in front of the Rector’s Office building, which commemorates the crimes of National Socialism and the expulsion of Jewish medical professionals, as well as the ‘Corona Memorial of Hope’ in front of the University Hospital Vienna.

The reconstruction of Gustav Klimt’s faculty painting ‘Medicine’ on the façade of the Anna Spiegel Research Building is also part of the tour. Originally created for the University of Vienna and destroyed in 1945, the painting has been digitally reconstructed using artificial intelligence, thereby bringing a significant work of Viennese Modernism back to life.

Further stops include the Josephinum, MedUni Vienna’s museum of medical history, the former General Hospital, and what is now the University Clinic of Dentistry in the historic Garrison Hospital.

Self-guided tour with a smartphone
The audio guide is available via the Hearonymus app, a digital platform for audio tours of museums, cultural sites and places of interest. Users can access the individual chapters directly on their smartphone and explore the stops independently of a guided tour . Once downloaded, the audio content is available even without an internet connection.

The new audio guide is aimed at anyone who would like to learn more about the MedUni campus and its history – from students and staff to patients and their relatives, as well as visitors and those with an interest in the history of medicine.
