(Vienna, 30 September 2026) The Medical University of Vienna has improved its position in the latest THE World University Rankings 2027 and now ranks 180th. This means it is once again among the world’s top 200 universities. In a comparison of Austrian universities, MedUni Vienna remains in second place behind the University of Vienna. 180th place is MedUni Vienna’s best ranking since this non-medicine-specific ranking was first published.
MedUni Vienna achieved particularly strong results in the indicators of research quality, industry collaboration and internationalisation.
The Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings are internationally regarded as one of the most important university rankings. They are based on a broad data set: bibliometric analyses of scientific publications, surveys on academic reputation, and financial and structural data provided by the universities themselves. A total of 2,297 universities were included in the current ranking, around 100 more than in the previous year.
The Times Higher Education World University Rankings assess research-intensive universities using 18 indicators, which are divided into five broad categories: teaching, research environment, research quality, internationalisation, and industry and patent engagement. The methodology remained unchanged from the previous year.
