University Hospital Vienna ranks among World's best hospitals

All News

(Vienna, 08 March 2021/APA) - Austria's largest hospital, University Hospital Vienna, has been recognised by the US news magazine Newsweek and data research firm Statista: the hospital and its MedUni Vienna departments were ranked 27th in the list of 200 top hospitals in 25 countries (a total of 2,000 hospitals having been assessed). In second place for Austria came Innsbruck University Hospital (49).

Effectively, the listed hospitals are located in most of the rich industrialised countries (USA, Germany, Japan, South Korea, France, Italy, Switzerland, Israel, etc.). "These countries were mainly selected based on standard of living and life expectancy, population size, number of hospitals and data availability," wrote the US news magazine.

The lists are based on three primary data sources: recommendations from a team of international experts, patient surveys and available performance indicators (Healthcare Key Performance Indicators - KPIs). An individual ranking was made for the first hundred hospitals. The hospitals ranked 101 to 200 were grouped together. 350 of the approximately 2,000 hospitals that were assessed are located in the USA. The comments about methodology state: "Scores are only comparable between hospitals in the same country, because different sources for patient experience and medical KPIs were examined in each country".

Nevertheless, an accurate ranking was produced for the first hundred hospitals. At the top of the list is the Mayo Clinic in Rochester (Minnesota, USA), in second place the Cleveland  Clinic in Ohio (USA). Third place went to Massachusetts General Hospital (Boston), which is also famous in the world of medicine.

In sixth place is the first hospital from a German-speaking country, Charité in Berlin (in 7th place is Karolinska University Hospital, Stockholm). 12th place is occupied by University Hospital Zurich.

Vienna General Hospital ended up in 27th place. With around 77,500 inpatient admissions, 460,000 outpatients (1.2 million outpatients visits), the largest hospital in Austria, together with the departments of MedUni Vienna, truly counts as a "large" hospital, even against an international metric. When making a comparison with US hospitals, it is also important to remember that the Mayo Clinic, for example, and many similar institutions are private hospitals.

49th place on the list is taken by Innsbruck Regional Hospital, together with its university departments. Newsweek lists the regional hospitals in Graz, Salzburg and Linz, likewise university hospitals, in the group of best hospitals ranked between 101  and 200.
