(Vienna, 25 January 2023) The internationally renowned addiction expert Gabriele Fischer from the University Department of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy and the Centre for Public Health at MedUni Vienna has been nominated once again for the Scientific Advisory Board of the European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction (EMCDDA).

The EMCDDA (European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction), based in Lisbon, was founded in 1993 with the aim of providing objective, reliable and comparable information that provides the Member States with an overview of the phenomenon of individual drugs and addictive diseases and their effects. To this end, a report on the state of the drug issues is published annually.

The Scientific Committee of EMCDDA consists of eleven renowned international scientists in the interdisciplinary field of substance use disorders. Its tasks include advising the agency on the management of the addiction and drug strategy for the European Union. In addition to the focus on "illicit substances", the mandate was recently expanded to include the areas of alcohol and behavioural addictions. "Our work is an important contribution to the political handling of the increasingly changing drug problem in the EU," says Gabriele Fischer.
