(Vienna, 16 November 2023) Richard Pötter, former Head and Professor Emeritus of the Department of Radiation Oncology and pioneer in brachytherapy, has been awarded honorary membership of the American College of Radiology (ACR) in Washington DC as a Fellow of ACR (FACR). This honour is awarded for exceptional achievements in radiology.
Richard Pötter is internationally renowned for his work in the treatment of gynaecological cancers, in particular for the new adaptive targeting concepts for cervical cancer and the ground-breaking EMBRACE studies. In these studies, the advantages of image-guided adaptive brachytherapy for cervical cancer have been and are being scientifically investigated.
His great commitment to the European Society for Radiotherapy and Oncology (ESTRO) and his voluntary work in other organisations show how important cooperation with experts outside his own institution is. Richard Pötter is a member of a European and international network of gynaecological experts that has existed for 25 years and originally developed joint European, American and international guidelines for the treatment of cervical and vaginal cancer.
Although he is now retired, Richard Pötter continues to pursue his research interests and is committed to ensuring that the results of the international EMBRACE project continue to improve clinical practice worldwide. His work will continue to have a positive impact on the treatment of patients in the future. Richard Pötter was awarded honorary membership at the ACR's 100th Annual Meeting on 7 May 2023.
About Richard Pötter
Richard Pötter headed the Department of Radiation Oncology of Medical University of Vienna from 1993 to 2016, during which time he developed comprehensive radiotherapy options and multidisciplinary tumour boards. Scientific focus with numerous internationally renowned interdisciplinary teams, in "Imaging" (world's first MRI in radiotherapy in 1998 in Vienna), including with medical radiation physics in image-guided brachytherapy and teletherapy (precision radiotherapy). Numerous habilitations and later PhDs (Clinical and Experimental Oncology). Regular international fellows and gynaecological hands-on workshops in Vienna and internationally. He initiated and led the interdisciplinary "Vienna International Summer School of Oncology" (VSSO) for medical students from all over the world. 470 peer reviewed publications and more than 50 book chapters, editor of 3 books on brachytherapy and many articles. Active teacher in the "ESTRO School" and from 2006 - 2016 head of the European postgraduate School for Radiotherapy and Oncology ("ESTRO School"). Numerous international awards and honorary memberships.
