(Vienna, 01 March 2024) Sebastian Schoppmann, Department of General Surgery at the Medical University of Vienna, will take up a professorship of Oncological Surgery (§99(1)) at MedUni Vienna on March 1, 2024.

Schoppmann is an expert in minimally invasive techniques in visceral surgery. The fields of work of his professorship, which Sebastian Schoppmann has formulated, cover various areas on the path to the future of this specialty. Conceptually, the aim is to further increase integration into multidisciplinary approaches. Technically, innovations such as robot-assisted surgery, natural orifice surgery and intraoperative imaging should improve patients' quality of life. The use of artificial intelligence, including machine learning and computer vision, will accelerate the translation of research findings into clinical practice even further in the future.

Sebastian Schoppmann sees surgical oncology as locally anchored and highly specialized, although there is a close conceptual connection. He sees a need for improved national and international interdisciplinary communication structures and sees the promotion and recruitment of young talent as a key challenge. His planned measures are aimed at attracting talented young academics, highlighting the importance of knowledge growth and helping to ensure that surgical interventions can be increasingly individualized and personalized in terms of precision medicine.

Sebastian Schoppmann would also like to further expand MedUni Vienna's position as a leading reference center for surgical oncology and strengthen its attractiveness as a study center. Another focus will be on translational research into gastric and esophageal diseases. This should further develop surgical oncology and further establish its role in the fight against cancer.
