Gergely Szakács is a new member of the Academia Europaea

(Vienna, 28 October 2026) Gergely Szakács from the Center for Cancer Research at MedUni Vienna has been elected to the Academia Europaea, one of Europe’s most prestigious scientific academies. The new members were officially welcomed at the Building Bridges ’26 conference in Budapest.

The new members, who were congratulated by Donald B. Dingwell, President of the Academia Europaea, have achieved "results of international standing" in their respective fields. As a researcher at the Center for Cancer Research at MedUni Vienna and at the HUN-REN Research Centre for Natural Sciences in Budapest, Gergely Szakács investigates the molecular mechanisms underlying drug resistance in cancer. His work focuses on how cancer cells develop resistance to treatments and how this process might be prevented or delayed.

Founded in 1988, Academia Europaea is a pan-European academy that brings together leading scholars and researchers from around the world. It has more than 5,500 members, including over 80 Nobel laureates. Election is a mark of high esteem from the international scientific community and the result of a rigorous, multi-stage selection process. It is not possible to apply for membership of Academia Europaea. Candidates are nominated by existing members, their scientific achievements are assessed by the relevant Section Committees, and the final decision on election rests with the Academia Europaea Board of Trustees. The principal criterion is a sustained record of outstanding, internationally recognised research.
