The ranking, compiled by the organisation Global Research Partnerships, examines scientific collaboration between universities and companies. MedUni Vienna achieved particularly strong rankings in the fields of biotechnology, pharmacy and medical technology.

In the subject-specific rankings, MedUni Vienna is ranked 31st out of 220 universities in the field of biotechnology and advanced therapies, 38th out of 638 in the field of pharmacy and therapeutics, and 45th out of 323 institutions in the field of medical technology and digital health. In the overall ranking, MedUni Vienna is assigned to the second-highest category, ‘Gold’.

Scientific collaborations as the basis for assessment
The Industry Collaboration Index is based on scientific publications from 2021 to 2025 that were published jointly by universities and companies. The open scientific database OpenAlex serves as the data source. The assessment takes into account only verified collaborations and does not rely on reputation surveys or self-reported data from the universities. The ranking therefore reflects a specific aspect of research performance: scientific collaboration with industry.
