Twenty-one of the world’s 3,500 most highly cited researchers for 2017 work as researchers in Austria. This is the result of a list of "Highly Cited Researchers" recently published by Clarivate Analytics.

More Austrian researchers are on the list than in previous years: there were 20 in 2016 and 18 in both 2015 and 2014. Citations in publications between 2005 and 2015 were used as a basis for incorporation into the "Highly Cited Researchers" group. In addition to the number of publications in specialist journals, how frequently a work has been cited by colleagues in the field serves as a measure of the scientific relevance of a researcher’s work.

Rheumatologist Josef Smolen is head of the Department of Medicine III and neuroscientist Hans Lassmann has headed up the Division of Neuroimmunology at MedUni Vienna’s Center for Brain Research for many years.
