17,599 register for MedAT university entrance exam to study medicine

Medical universities are backing 14 August as the exam date

(Vienna/Innsbruck/Graz/Linz, 07 May 2020) Applications to take part in the joint entrance exam for a place at the medical universities of Vienna, Innsbruck or Graz or the Medical Faculty of Johannes Kepler University (JKU) in Linz closed at the end of March. Interest in studying medicine continues to rise: 17,599 university applicants have signed up for the entrance exam. In 2019, there were 16,443 registered candidates. Pending the directive from the Ministry of Education, the preferred date for the exam is 14 August 2020.

The application figures in detail:

Medical University of Vienna: A total of 8,620 applicants (2019: 8,217) – 7,973 for human medicine, 647 for dentistry. The gender break-down is: 3,137 men (2019: 3,113), 5,481 women (2019: 5,104) and 2 other.


Medical University of Innsbruck: A total of 4,008 applicants (2019: 3,826) – 3,650 (1,367 men, 2,283 women) for human medicine, 358 (124 men, 234 women) for dentistry. The gender break-down is: 1,491 men (2019: 1,440) and 2,517 women (2019: 2,386).


Medical University of Graz: A total of 3,139 applicants (2019: 3,084) – 2,982[U1]  (2019: 2,932) for human medicine, 168 (2019: 152) for dentistry. The gender break-down is: 1,191 men (2019: 1,216) and 1,948 women (2019: 868).


Medical Faculty of JKU Linz:  A total of 1,832 applicants (2019: 1,316). The gender break-down is: 698 men (2019: 503), 1,133 women (2019: 813) and 1 other.


14 August a suitable date
Pending the directive from the Ministry of Education, the medical universities in Vienna, Innsbruck and Graz and the Medical Faculty of Johannes Kepler University Linz are backing 14 August 2020 as the earliest possible date for the MedAt exam. It is important to ensure that all participants are kept as safe as possible in terms of the Covid-19 infection risk. With this in mind, work is ongoing to devise the optimum work sequences, exam locations and other details.

60 more university places in Linz – 1,740 in total
There are a total of 1,740 university places available for human medicine and dentistry for the 2020/21 academic year, 740 of these at the Medical University of Vienna (660 human medicine/80 dentistry), 400 at the Medical University of Innsbruck (360 human medicine/40 dentistry), 360 at the Medical University of Graz and 240 at the Medical Faculty of JKU Linz (as against 180 in 2019). At least 95% of university places are reserved for EU citizens and those with equivalent rights of access to education and at least 75% of places for applicants with an Austrian school leaving certificate. This quota system only applies to the allocation of university places for human medicine.
