Inauguration ceremony for the new Rector of the Medical University of Vienna

The inauguration ceremony for the new Rector of MedUni Vienna, Markus Müller, was held this Tuesday, 27 October 2015, in the Van Swieten Hall at MedUni Vienna. The ceremony was attended by more than 500 guests, including the team of Vice Rectors and numerous MedUni Vienna staff plus many prominent people from the worlds of science, research and politics, as well as rectors from other Austrian universities. In keeping with ceremonial tradition, outgoing rector Wolfgang Schütz presented the rector’s chain and sceptre to Markus Müller.

(Vienna, 27 October 2015) The inauguration ceremony for the new Rector of MedUni Vienna, Markus Müller, was held this Tuesday, 27 October 2015, in the Van Swieten Hall at MedUni Vienna. The ceremony was attended by more than 500 guests, including the team of Vice Rectors and numerous MedUni Vienna staff plus many prominent people from the worlds of science, research and politics, as well as rectors from other Austrian universities. In keeping with ceremonial tradition, outgoing rector Wolfgang Schütz presented the rector’s chain and sceptre to Markus Müller.

With his new team, including Vice Rectors Michaela Fritz (responsible for Research and Innovation), Anita Rieder (Education), Volkan Talazoglu (Finance) and Oswald Wagner (Clinical Affairs), Markus Müller took over his official duties from Wolfgang Schütz on 1 October 2015.

"I am convinced that, with our team of renowned experts, we will be able to overcome the huge challenges with which we are currently faced and turn our university into an international leader," said new Rector Markus Müller, who has held the post of Vice Rector for Research for the last four years and previously served as Director of the University Department of Clinical Pharmacology for 13 years.

The Medical University's new Vice Rector team for 2015 – 2019:

Dr. Michaela Fritz, Vice Rector for Research and Innovation has headed up the Health and Environment Department at the Austrian Institute of Technology (AIT) since 2010. Before that she was Head of Life Science Austria (LISA) within Austria Wirtschaftsservice GmbH and Managing Director of the Vienna Cluster Initiative LISA VR (Life Sciences Austria Vienna Region). Fritz studied at ETH Zürich and the University of California, Berkeley.

Univ.-Prof.in Dr.in Anita Rieder, Vice Rector for Education, was appointed Professor for Social Medicine at MedUni Vienna in 2000 and manages the Centre for Public Health. Rieder studied medicine in Vienna, qualified in Social Medicine in 1997 and has been Curriculum Director for medical studies at MedUni Vienna since 2007.

Mag. Dr. Volkan Talazoglu, Vice Rector for Finance, has been manager of the "University Medicine Vienna 2020" project since 2012. He has previously worked as an adviser and member of the European Healthcare Practice at McKinsey & Company focusing on the healthcare sector and before that he managed international healthcare IT projects at Hewlett Packard, Agilent Technologies and Philips Healthcare. He graduated in medicine and economics.

o.Univ.-Prof. Dr. Oswald Wagner, Vice Rector for Clinical Affairs has been a full university professor since 1998 and Head of the Clinical Institute for Medical and Chemical Laboratory Diagnostics. Prior to his election, Wagner was Chairman of the Senate and had already served a term of office as Vice Rector for Clinical Affairs up until 2011. Wagner qualified as a professor of Medical and Chemical Laboratory Diagnostics at the age of 31 and has worked as a professor and Chairman of the Institute for Clinical Chemistry and Pathobiochemistry at the University of Leipzig.
