(Vienna, 02-07-2015) The University Council of the Medical University of Vienna has unanimously appointed Vice Rectors until 2019. In this way, the committee, under the chairmanship of the former Vice Chancellor and Science Minister Erhard Busek, has followed the recommendations made by the designated Rector, Markus Müller.
As a result, the MedUni Vienna also has four Vice Rectors in the coming years, who will however in part dispose over different business divisions: Michaela Fritz will in future be responsible for Research and Innovation, Anita Rieder for Education, Volkan Talazoglu for Finance and Oswald Wagner for Clinical Affairs. The division “gender & diversity” – until now in the department of the Vice Rector for Education, falls within the competence of the rector
Anita Rieder and Oswald Wagner, two of the Vice Rectors, were already employed in Management positions at the MedUni Vienna, Michaela Fritz comes from the Austrian Institute of Technology (AIT), and Volkan Talazoglu is Head of the Project "Universitätsmedizin Wien 2020" (University Medicine 2020).
The designated Rector, Markus Müller, is delighted regarding the unanimous appointment by the University Council: "I am delighted about this great vote of confidence by the University Council for my desired team. I am convinced that with this team of renowned experts we will be in a position to solve our major, current challenges, and place our university in a top international position." Müller himself was appointed as Rector on 26th May by the University Council. A few days ago Michael Gnant, head of the Department of Surgery, was chosen as successor to Oswald Wagner as Chairman of the Senate of the Medical University of Vienna.
The new period of office for the Rector and his Vice Rectors begins on 1st October 2015.
The new Vice Rector team at the Medical University for 2015 – 2019:
Dr. Michaela Fritz, Vice Rector for Research and Innovation, has been Head of Health and Environment Department at the Austrian Institute of Technology (AIT) since 2010. Prior to this, she was employed as Head of Life Science Austria (LISA) at the Austria Wirtschaftsservice GmbH and as Managing Director of the Vienna Cluster Initiative LISA VR (Life Sciences Austria Vienna Region). Fritz studied at ETH Zürich and the University of California, Berkeley.
Univ.-Prof.in Dr.in Anita Rieder, Vice Rector for Education, was appointed as Professor for Social Medicine at the MedUni Vienna in 2000 and manages the Centre for Public Health. Rieder studied medicine in Vienna, qualified as a professor in the field of Social Medicine in 1997, and has been Curriculum Director for studies in medicine at the MedUni Vienna since 2007.
Mag. Dr. Volkan Talazoglu, Vice Rector for Finance, has been responsible for the complete management of the project "Universitätsmedizin Wien 2020“(University medicine Vienna 2020) since 2012. He completed his studies in medicine and economics in Vienna and has been employed by several companies, amongst others McKinsey and Hewlett Packard, in international health care, pharmaceutical and IT projects.
o.Univ.-Prof. Dr. Oswald Wagner, Vice Rector for Clinical Affairs, has been a full university professor since 1998 and Head of the Clinical Institute for Medical and Chemical Laboratory Diagnostics. Until his election, Wagner was Chairman of the Senate, and until 2011 he already held a period of office as Vice Rector for Clinical Affairs. Wagner qualified as a Professor for Medical and Chemical Laboratory Diagnostics at 31, and acts as professor and Chairman of the Institute for Clinical Chemistry and Pathobiochemistry at the University of Leipzig.
