Postdoctoral Researcher in tissue regeneration and stem cell metabolism (m/f/d)
With around 6.500 employees and 8.600 students, the Medical University of Vienna is one of the largest top-level biomedical research and teaching institutions in Europe. The Center for Pathobiochemistry and Genetics/Institute of Medical Genetics is looking for a full-time (40 hours per week) Postdoctoral Researcher (m/f/d) to start immediately on a fixed-term contract for two years (with the option to extend).
We are seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher to join the Miller Lab at the Medical University of Vienna, Austria, and investigate how metabolic processes regulate tissue regeneration. The project will compare regenerative responses in different tissues, with a particular focus on how nuclear metabolic and epigenetic interactions support changes in cellular state, proliferation, and tissue repair.
The project builds on our work of liver regeneration and will extend to tissues that use different regenerative strategies, such as muscle, kidney, and pancreas. The choice of additional regenerative models remains open and can be shaped by the candidate’s scientific interests and expertise. The postdoctoral researcher will establish and apply these complementary murine regeneration models in combination with selected stem cell models to identify tissue-specific mechanisms of regeneration. In addition, the successful candidate will have the opportunity to develop an independent research direction within the project. The metabolic aspects, including state-of-the-art metabolomics and in vivo stable isotope tracing using our Orbitrap mass spectrometer, as well as multiple liver regeneration models, are already established. Other organ regeneration models will need to be developed and optimized. The position therefore offers a unique opportunity for a researcher with strong expertise in regenerative and/or stem cell biology who is interested in gaining expertise in metabolic research at the intersection with epigenetics.
What we are looking for
Applicants should hold a PhD in regenerative biology, stem cell biology, developmental biology, molecular biology, cell biology, biomedicine, or a related field, with a strong publication record appropriate to their career stage. Early-career postdocs are welcome.
Essential experience
- Research experience in tissue regeneration, regenerative biology, regenerative medicine, or stem cell biology, particularly involving tissue-resident stem/progenitor cells
- Substantial experience working with mouse models
- Strong expertise in molecular and cellular biology
- Ability to independently design experiments, troubleshoot protocols, analyse data, and develop new experimental approaches
Desirable experience
- Surgical or microsurgical experience in mouse models
- Experience with kidney, skeletal muscle, pancreatic, or other tissue regeneration models
- -Omics experience, including data analysis for metabolomics, proteomics, and epigenomic approaches
We are particularly interested in candidates who are scientifically curious, technically versatile, and enthusiastic about working across different biological disciplines. Experience in every technique listed above is not expected; however, prior expertise in regenerative biology and substantial experience with mouse models is essential.
The research environment
The laboratory is located at the Medical University in the heart of beautiful Vienna, one of Europe's most attractive and internationally connected cities. Our young laboratory is an international and interdisciplinary team, bringing together researchers with expertise from different fields, including metabolism, cell and molecular biology, and analytical chemistry. The project provides opportunities to work closely with researchers from different scientific backgrounds and to establish collaborations across disciplines.
The minimum monthly salary for this position (Uni-KV, VerwGr. B1b) is currently Euro 5.014,- gross (14x per year) on a full-time basis and may be increased by taking into account relevant previous experience and other salary components related to the specificities of the job.
We welcome and encourage applications from people with disabilities and/or chronic illnesses. If you have any questions, please contact the Disability Liaison Officer of MedUni Vienna.
How to apply
Please submit:
- Curriculum vitae (CV)
- Letter of motivation describing your research background, your expertise in regenerative biology, and why you are interested in this position
- Contact details for three referees
