(Vienna, 02 February 2024) Bernhard Baumann, physicist at MedUni Vienna's Center for Medical Physics and Biomedical Engineering, has taken up a professorship (§99/4) in the field of Medical Physics with effect from 1 February 2024.
Bernhard Baumann and his team are researching new techniques for optical imaging in biological tissues. A particular focus is on the development and application of methods based on optical coherence tomography (OCT), which can be used to create high-resolution, three-dimensional images in real time in a non-invasive way. As part of national and European research projects, Baumann's group is researching contrast-enhancing OCT methods and their application in the eye and neurological tissue. To this end, Baumann holds a prestigious ERC Proof-of-Concept Grant from the European Research Council, which builds on an ERC Starting Grant.
Bernhard Baumann studied physics at the University of Vienna and completed his PhD under OCT pioneer Christoph Hitzenberger at MedUni Vienna's Center for Medical Physics and Biomedical Engineering (ZMPBMT). After a research stay at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Tufts Medical Center, he returned to MedUni Vienna, where he was Assistant Professor from 2013 and Associate Professor from 2016. He is actively involved in teaching in the medical curriculum and in PhD programs at MedUni Vienna.
