Johannes Längle wins Georg Stumpf scholarship

(Vienna, 12 November 2020) Johannes Längle from the Division of General Surgery at the Department of Surgery of MedUni Vienna and Vienna General Hospital and member of the Comprehensive Cancer Center (CCC) has been awarded the 2020 "Georg Stumpf Cancer Research Scholarship" by the Austrian Society of Surgical Oncology (ACO-ASSO).

The title of the study is "Impact of DNA damage on stress granules and stemness factors in colorectal liver metastases" and it is being conducted within the framework of the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute Applied Diagnostics (lbi:ad) and the Comprehensive Cancer Center Vienna (CCC).

In this research project, Johannes Längle will build on his previous results and investigate the impact of DNA damage on stress granules and stemness factors in patients with colorectal liver metastases. The aim of this study is to gain a better understanding of the negative impact of DNA damage on relapse-free survival and overall survival, in order to be better able to provide therapeutic interventions in the spirit of precision medicine.

About Johannes Längle
Johannes Längle studied human medicine at the Medical University of Vienna and was the frequent recipient of merit-based scholarships, as well as being awarded a research grant. He then completed a PhD in "Immunology" at the Medical University of Vienna. He is currently undergoing specialist training in general surgery and abdominal surgery at the Division of General Surgery within the Department of Surgery.
The main focus of his scientific interest is tumour immunology, immuno-oncology and surgical oncology. His research activities have won him, inter alia, a research grant from Fellinger Cancer Research, the Theodor Billroth Prize awarded by Vienna Medical Association, as well as various lecture and poster prizes at national (ACO-ASSO, ÖCK) and international conferences (ITOC).
In addition to his research work, Johannes Längle also teaches on the human medicine and PhD courses and supervises bachelor theses and dissertations.

About the ACO-ASSO Georg Stumpf Scholarship
The Austrian Society of Surgical Oncology (ACO-ASSO) is once again awarding the €10,000 "Georg Stumpf Cancer Research Scholarship" in 2020. It is aimed at promoting exceptionally qualified and motivated young doctors in the field of surgical oncology and actively supporting them in their future careers.
