(Vienna/Innsbruck/Graz/Linz, 24 February 2021) As from 01 March 2021, candidates can register for the 2021 entrance exam to gain a university place to study medicine or dentistry at the medical universities of Vienna, Innsbruck or Graz or the Medical Faculty of Johannes Kepler University Linz (JKU) on the website: www.medizinstudieren.at. Applications to sit the entrance exam, which will be held on 21 July 2021 (approx. 8:00 – 17:00 hrs) close on 31 March 2021.

All details of the admissions procedures and all study locations are available on the joint website www.medizinstudieren.at, together with answers to FAQs. Due to the pandemic, the entrance exam for Vienna will be held at two venues, as it was last year. Applicants will be allocated to the venues based on their stated home address: as in 2020, the exam will be held in Salzburg Exhibition Centre for applicants from Western Austria and Germany and in Messe Wien for all other applicants, including those applying to study dentistry.

To help you prepare for the exam, the website provides numerous examples of exercises and information about the individual elements of the exam and task groups, together with general working hints and instructions. You do not need to provide a school leaving certificate to register online or to take part in the MedAT entrance exam. This only has to be produced at the time of admission, once the results have been announced in August – probably at the end of calendar week 33.

Content of the MedAT-H and MedAT-Z entrance exams
The entrance exam for human medicine (Med-AT-H) is a multi-part, written exam comprising the following elements:

  • Basic knowledge test for medical studies: checking existing knowledge from school in the areas of biology, chemistry, physics and mathematics.
  • Text comprehension: checking reading ability and understanding of texts.
  • Cognitive skills and abilities: this part of the test consists of five groups of exercises (assembling figures, numerical sequences, language proficiency, memory and retention and recognising implications) and covers basic cognitive skills and abilities.
  • Social and emotional skills: this part of the exam consists of a group of exercises on Reading Emotions and Social Decision-Making, covering important aspects of social and emotional skills.

The entrance exam for dentistry (MedAT-Z) is largely identical to MedAT-H, except that the "Text Comprehension" section of the test is replaced by "Manual Skills" and the group of exercises on "Understanding Implications” is replaced by "Wire Bending" and "Reproducing Shapes".
