MedAT admissions procedure to study medicine: 17,823 applications

(Vienna/Innsbruck/Graz/Linz, 20 April 2021) Applications to take part in the joint admissions procedure for a place at the medical universities of Vienna, Innsbruck or Graz or the Medical Faculty of Johannes Kepler University (JKU) in Linz closed at the end of March. By 31 March 2021, a total of 17,823 people has registered for the entrance exam to be held on 21 July. The number of registered candidates in March 2020 was17,600.

The application figures in detail:
Medical University of Vienna: A total of 8,713 applicants (2020: 8,620) – 8,044 for human medicine, 669 for dentistry. The gender break-down is: 3,120 male (2020: 3,137), 5,587 female (2020: 5,481) and 6 other (2020: 2).

Medical University of Innsbruck: A total of 3,951 applicants (2020: 4,009) – 3,620 for human medicine, 331 for dentistry. The gender break-down is: 1,395 male (2020: 1,492), 2,555 female (2020: 2,517) and 1 other (2020: 0).

Medical University of Graz: A total of 2,936 applicants (2020: 3,139) – 2,759 for human medicine, 177 for dentistry. The gender break-down is: 1,097 male (2020: 1,191) and 1,839 female (2020: 1,948).

Medical Faculty of JKU Linz:  A total of 2,223 applicants (2020: 1,832). The gender break-down is: 850 male (2020: 698), 1,373 female (2020: 1,133) and 0 other (2020: 1).

Content of the MedAT-H and MedAT-Z entrance exams
The entrance exam for human medicine (Med-AT-H) is a multi-part, written exam comprising the following elements:

  • Basic knowledge test for medical studies: checking existing knowledge from school in the areas of biology, chemistry, physics and mathematics.
  • Text comprehension: checking reading ability and understanding of texts.
  • Cognitive skills and abilities: this part of the test consists of five groups of exercises (assembling figures, numerical sequences, language proficiency, memory and retention and recognising implications) and covers basic cognitive skills and abilities.
  • Social and emotional skills: this part of the exam consists of a group of exercises on Reading Emotions and Social Decision-Making, covering important aspects of social and emotional skills.

The entrance exam for dentistry (MedAT-Z) is largely identical to MedAT-H, except that the "Text Comprehension" section of the test is replaced by "Manual Skills" and the group of exercises on "Understanding Implications” is replaced by "Wire Bending" and "Reproducing Shapes".

A total of 1,740 university places available
There are a total of 1,740 university places available for human medicine and dentistry for the 2021/22 academic year, 740 of these at the Medical University of Vienna, 400 at the Medical University of Innsbruck, 360 at the Medical University of Graz and 240 at the Medical Faculty of JKU Linz. At least 95% of the university places are reserved for EU citizens and those with equivalent rights of access to education and at least 75% of places for applicants with an Austrian school leaving certificate. However, this quota system only applies to the allocation of university places for human medicine.
