The day at the Medical University of Vienna begins with a liturgical ceremony in St. Stephen's Cathedral. After a prayer service, Rector Markus Müller, together with the Rector of the University of Vienna, Sebastian Schütze, will lay the traditional wreath in the crypt of St. Stephen's Cathedral at the tomb of Rudolph, the founder.
An annual memorial service for the university's founder has been part of the academic calendar of the University of Vienna, to which the Medical University of Vienna belonged until 2004, since 1396. The wreath-laying ceremony at the cenotaph of Rudolf IV has been held since the middle of the 20th century.
