(Vienna, 29-09-2022) Since 2007, more than 60 scientific projects pertaining to tumours have been supported by donations from the MedUni Vienna Cancer Research Run. This year, the participants, partners and sponsors of the 16th Cancer Research Run will use their donations to support further promising research projects aiming to improve the diagnosis and therapy for cancer patients. The charity event will take place on 8 October between 10 am and 2 pm.

The runners in this year's Cancer Research Run of MedUni Vienna will once again be able to complete as many laps as they like at their own pace on the original 1.6-kilometre course at Unicampus Altes AKH. The Covid-related option of "distant running" on a freely selectable running route will also be available in 2022. During the run, all participants can meet on the social media channels of the Cancer Research Run (https://www.facebook.com/Krebsforschungslauf/) and MedUni Vienna (https://www.facebook.com/MedizinischeUniversitaetWien) and post and share photos and videos under the hashtags #krebsforschungslauf and #wirlaufenweiter. In addition, Radio 88.6 will connect all participants and broadcast a "Best of running songs" for the Cancer Research Run on 8 October between 10 am and 2 pm. The participants of the Cancer Research Run can submit requests for songs on the playlist in advance via the radio's website or the 88.6 Facebook site.

Registration and donation for this year's 16th Cancer Research Run can be made on the website www.krebsforschungslauf.at. An official functional running shirt, this year in Hawaiian Blue, can be purchased for 20 Euros at the MedUni Shop in the AKH Vienna or at shop@meduniwien.ac.at . Matching the running shirt, a Cancer Research Run headband is available from the Intersport branches in Vienna and Lower Austria in exchange for a donation. Approximately 100 additional companies are supporting the Charity Action for cancer research.

Cancer mortality decreases thanks to research
Every year, approximately 42,000 people are diagnosed with cancer; men are affected slightly more often than women. Malignant tumours are the second most common cause of death after cardiovascular diseases for both sexes. The most common cancers in Austria are breast cancer in women and prostate cancer in men. Even though the number of newly diagnosed patients is increasing, the cancer mortality rate is falling. The relative three-year survival has increased continuously throughout the past decades and amounts on average to around 65 percent in the diagnosis period 2013 to 2016 (source: Austrian Cancer Report 2021). This positive development is decisively due to the progress in cancer medicine. With the results of basic research, diagnostic and therapeutic procedures are improved and new treatment concepts are made possible.

100 % of the money raised by MedUni Vienna’s Cancer Research Run goes towards research projects run by MedUni Vienna's Cancer Research Initiative. The 14 ongoing projects currently being funded with the donation proceeds aim to advance the development of targeted, personalised therapies in the context of precision medicine.
