(Vienna, 03 November 2023) A total of around 3,500 runners, including 86 companies with running teams, as sponsors or cooperation partners, supported cancer research at the Medical University of Vienna with their participation. Around 260,000 euros were raised for science at this year's 17th Cancer Research Run. As is the case every year, 100% of the donations went to projects run by MedUni Vienna's Cancer Research Initiative. In this way, over 60 scientific projects aimed at improving the diagnosis and treatment of tumor diseases have already been supported since the charity event was launched last year.
MedUni Vienna scientists are currently funding 14 promising projects. These are primarily aimed at advancing the development of personalized therapies in cancer research. The fact that cancer mortality is falling despite the rising number of new cases is largely due to advances in cancer research, which are made possible by the results of basic research.
In Austria, around 42,000 people are diagnosed with cancer every year; men are affected slightly more often than women. For both sexes, malignant tumors are the second most common cause of death after cardiovascular diseases. The most common cancers in Austria are breast cancer in women and prostate cancer in men. Although the number of new cases is rising, cancer mortality is falling. The relative three-year survival rate has increased continuously in recent decades and currently stands at 90.6 to 96.6 percent for breast, prostate, thyroid and testicular cancer, for example.
